Picacho Peak Hike

(Carrie) Charles and I wanted to hike Picacho Peak before the State Park closes in June. We are sad that only 9 of Arizona's 27 State Parks will remain open after June due to budget cuts.

Picacho Peak is located about 45 minutes north of Tucson. We pass the 1,500 foot peak every time we drive to and from Phoenix. Saturday's forecast looked perfect (75 degrees, no rain), so we went on a hike! We took the 2 mile Hunter Trail to the top.

The trail was more difficult than we expected, climbing over rocks and very steep most of the way. There were steel cables anchored into the rock in places to help in the climb.

Once we reached the saddle, we then climbed down very steep rock which reminded me of a waterslide!

The trail then continued upward along the cliff face. A lot of the trail was narrow and only allowed for one-way traffic, so we had plenty of time to rest.

I stopped short of the peak when the trail became too narrow and the drop-offs too high for my comfort. I stopped about 5 minutes after this picture was taken.

Charles made it to the top of the peak.

Charles after he successfully made it to the peak! The peak is in the background. If you very look close, you can see hikers on the trail at the peak.

Charles said this is the most extreme hike he's ever been on! It definitely was a fun and challenging hike!

After the hike, we explored the State Park a little bit. The Mormon Battalion camped at the base of Picacho Peak on their journey to San Diego. Also, this is the site of the "westernmost battle of the Civil War".

That hike looks amazing, but I think I would have stopped about where you did Carrie! Way to go Charles for reaching the summit! That's too bad they are closing so many parks.
