Memorial Day Weekend 2011

We spent this Memorial Day weekend in Springerville/Eagar/Greer, Arizona - little towns with a bunch of lakes to fish!

Charles' coworkers told him how great the fishing is at Big Lake, so we spent a few hours there Saturday morning. Charles caught two fish, which made his day! I didn't catch any fish at that lake (or any lake for that matter), but thoroughly enjoyed relaxing and fishing at the lake with Charles.

First catch of the day.

Second catch of the day.

After fishing, we went on a private tour (because no one else happened to sign up for the tour) to the Casa Malpais ruins in Springerville. Our tour guide was wonderful and we learned alot about the people who lived at the site.

Saturday evening Charles tried his luck fishing at two different lakes in the area. He didn't catch any more fish. I enjoyed reading a book by the lake.

Sunday morning we went to church, then stopped by the first LDS meetinghouse in Springerville, built in 1879.

We then drove an hour to Petrified Forest National Park. We braved the 50 mph winds at the National Park and took a few small walks to see the petrified wood. The gusts of wind were so strong that we both lost our balance a few times!

Here's a funny video that shows just how strong the winds were.

A pretty piece of petrified wood.

We drove the scenic route through the park and stopped at the Puerco Pueblo for a close up look at some ruins and petroglyphs. In spite of the wind, we had a wonderful time at the Petrified Forest.

Sunday evening we took our heated microwave dinners to Big Lake to watch the sunset and look for feeding animals. We saw a bunch of cows (that from a distance I thought were moose) and 2 elk!

Monday we began our trip home. Along the way we stopped at Show Low Lake and at Woods Canyon Lake on the Mogollon Rim. It was a fun way to end our weekend! (total fish count: Carrie - 0, Charles - 2)

This is all so beautiful! It looks like you had a great time. Has most of this area been destroyed now by the fire? So sad...
