Day at the Desert Museum

We spent last Saturday at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum with my good friend Ximena and her family. This not your typical museum - but a zoo, natural history museum and botanical garden featuring only plants and animals that live in this area. The weather was perfect and it was nice to spend a relaxing day with Charles and Ximena.

Our first stop at the Desert Museum was to a show called "Raptor Free Flight". This is a bird of prey flight demonstration out in the open. We saw the Harris' Hawk family soar from cactus to cactus and fly just inches over our heads. It was very fun to see! The hawks were beautiful. I loved the white edges on their tail feathers.

We then strolled around the park and saw all of the exhibits. The majority of the animals were visible and active. I am amazed at the variety of animals that are in our desert!

I think the javelina are cute!

In the bat exhibit. I was surprised by how much more I could hear with the big ears.

Can you see the big horn sheep in the background?

After the day at the museum, we went to a fabulous Mexican restaurant called Mi Nidito. Many famous people have eaten there over the years. Bill Clinton ate at Mi Nidito when he was President. The restaurant has since decorated the table where Bill ate with Presidential memoribilia. We got to sit at that table for our delicious dinner.
